There's something about Spring that makes me want to get rid of everything. It feels like more of a fresh start than New Year's! I come from a family of hoarders, and while I'm sentimental about some things, I just love a good clear out. I also absolutely love the feeling of having everything fresh and clean... So this weekend I decluttered my makeup collection, got rid of some stuff and made everything clean and tidy. It was such a gorgeous day too, I did all this with the window open, there was a nice Spring breeze and birds chirping, and it felt great. So here are some of my tips and I'll be showing you some of the stuff I cleared out!
Declutter: Get rid of the products you don't use, that are old, and broken
It's hard to get inspired by your makeup when it's amongst a lot of other products that should be cleared out. Get rid of the makeup that you don't use; it's time to be ruthless. If the makeup is still in good condition, you can offer it to someone who wants it. For example, I no longer reach for my Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette. I've had it for 2 years, but I never really used it so I will be giving it to my sister who is 15 years old and just getting into makeup!
Some other items I'm getting rid of include old mascaras that are way past their 3-month-mark, and an Annabelle brow liner, which is in the shade Ebony and I find is way too dark and harsh on my eyebrows. I'm also getting rid of two purple blushes. I absolutely love the colour purple, and I'm such a sucker for purple makeup. However, both the blushes disappointed me. The Colourpop blush in Rain is so pretty but I'm not a fan of the texture. Likewise, the Clinique Cheek Pop blusher in Pansy Pop is a pretty pink-purple colour, but I find it lacks pigment. I have to use a brush with harder bristles and dig it in to get some colour payoff, and for that reason, I never reach for this product.
Other Colourpop products I'll be getting rid of are the shadows in I Spy, and I Heart This. I Spy is a little too yellow-orange toned for me, and I find that the matte shadows from Colourpop tend to become a little harder over time, like this did. I Heart This is a gorgeous shadow but unfortunately, it came to me in the post broken. I emailed Colourpop hoping they would replace it, but alas, they only gave me a coupon code covering the cost of the shadow. I would still have to pay for shipping so fuck that. I held onto this shadow because I thought I could press it in and make it work but it's much too crumbly and dry. Disappointed in you, Colourpop, tbh. I'm also getting rid of the Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Mars because it felt terrible on the lips and crumbled and it was just one of the most horrid liquid lipsticks I ever tried so BYE FELICIA.
Clean & reorganize your makeup storage
I keep my makeup in a drawer in a vanity, arranged in these clear plastic dividers from IKEA. Now, these dividers get gross and grimy over the year. Powders, brush hairs, and makeup crumbs seem to find their way into the corners. I took my makeup out of each compartment and cleaned it out with just a damp cloth. Some compartments were harder to clean than others, such as the one where I keep my eye & brow pencils. Some of the caps from the eye pencils had come off at some point and there were gross, grubby markings all over the clear plastic. For this, I just used my trusty makeup remover from Marcelle, and it worked like a charm.
And just to change things up, I switched around my makeup organization by just changing which compartments I keep products in. I noticed some products had somehow traveled to compartments to which they do not belong (why is my lip pencil in my eyeliner section?) so I just went through everything and made sure it was all in place.
Clean the brushes & tools
How often do you clean your brushes? I'm genuinely curious. I don't always clean my brushes all at once; I'll clean one here and one there (but I clean my sponges nearly every day). I think to have a successful Spring cleaning, you have to wash all your makeup brushes. Give them a good, thorough cleanse! Same goes to the sponges.
Some other things that you probably don't think of cleaning are eyelash curlers and pencil sharpeners. I cleaned the gross buildup on my eyelash curler and changed the rubber thingy. I don't know what it's called. But that was getting gross as well, and it had a dent in it, which made me a little concerned for my eyelashes. I cleaned my pencil sharpener as well, which was a little tricky but it doesn't have to be perfect! Just try and get the majority of the gunk off of it.
Have you done a makeup declutter recently? Do you have any other tips on decluttering and Spring cleaning? Hope you guys have a lovely week! xx
